At Melbourne Top Flooring, we provide top floor installation services to all our clients, but we understand that some people prefer to install it themselves, rather than pay the extra installation fee. That is why we have decided to help anyone who wants to install their own top flooring by explaining how the installation works.

Take your time

The key to putting in new flooring is spending adequate amount of time. Don’t try to rush the job, and get all your angles right to ensure perfection. Whether you have chosen vinyl, laminate or wood flooring, the flooring options we offer can be installed with ease. Take time to prepare, so that your floor installation doesn’t cause you undue stress.

Before you start – Your checklist

You must ensure that you double check the checklist to ensure smooth floor installation:

• Decide where you are going to lay the floor.
• Is it a hallway or corridor?
• Is the space square or rectangular?
• Do you have enough room to lay out the flooring?
• Have you left room for extra wastage?
• Make sure that the sub-floor is dry and clean.
• Keep it stored in a room at least 24 to 48 hours, so that it comes down to room temperature.
• Make sure that you have the appropriate tools to layout and install flooring.

Getting ready

Once you have gotten everything on the checklist, it is time to begin getting your top flooring ready for installation. You should ensure that the sub-floor is dry, and clean, because hidden debris underneath the flooring can spoil the installation. You should also know that:

Going straight

When you are installing your top flooring, make sure that you only go straight once you begin. It doesn’t matter what direction you lay out the floor, as long as you are going straight, you will get a clean and professional finish. This is done to ensure that you don’t get any slanted or cooked flooring. You can draw a pencil line to ensure that you are going straight when installing the flooring.

Mind the gap

You should also leave some space for gaps, because all natural products like wood and laminate floors will shrink and expand, depending on humidity levels and the temperature. Therefore, you should leave a small gap around the perimeter of the room, so that the floor can expand.
